How to Replace an audi tt key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

Land-Rover.pngIf this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and should be replaced. The good thing is that they are very affordable and Audi a3 spare key easily accessible, especially when you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of your audi car key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how the replacement audi car key's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig, and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, Audi Replacement keys between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a common part that is found across the audi q5 key 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
