How to Replace an audi key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

jaguar-logo.pngIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and requires replacement audi keys replacement key audi audi a4 key replacement (from the Xojh blog). The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible, especially when you're looking at the Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of your Audi's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. If this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a typical part across the audi key blade 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
