How to Replace an audi spare key q5 key (click through the next article) G28 Engine Speed Sensor

key-from-new-car-2021-08-29-05-15-15-utc-min-scaled.jpgIn this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of a Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi a3 key fob, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the replacement car key audi to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a standard part that is found across the audi lost key 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
