How to Replace an audi q5 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

286708_Volvo_Iron_Mark.jpg?Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

Some of the symptoms of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues with your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi a3 key tt replacement key for audi fob (autolocksmiths33772.uzblog.net website) since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is turning. If this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is a standard part across the audi remote key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
